‘Written in the stars’: Norwegian princess and Californian shaman tie the knot, with Netflix in waiting

Unconventional marriage of Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Vellet celebrated with three-day schedule of events and a documentary to follow

She is the clairvoyant daughter of one of Europe’s longest-serving monarchs; he is a self-styled sixth-generation shaman from California. The wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway to Durek Verrett on Saturday on Saturday afternoon wasn’t your conventional royal affair, but that didn’t stop spectators lining the overcast streets of Geiranger in the hope of catching a glimpse of the bride.

The eldest daughter of Crown Prince Harald and Queen Sonja, 52-year-old Märtha Louise is fourth in line to the Norwegian throne. She married Verrett, 49, in a traditional church of Norway ceremony attended by royals and celebrities at the four-star Hotel Union in a small village beneath the Geiranger fjord.

Germany to harden weapons laws and asylum rules after Solingen stabbing

Coalition government hopes tough action will prevent far-right victories in forthcoming state elections

Germany’s fractious coalition government has announced a hard-fought compromise on changes to weapons laws and asylum rules designed to prevent Islamist attacks such as last Friday’s mass stabbing that left three people dead.

Three days before key state elections in which each of the ruling parties risk heavy losses to the far right, government ministers said the knife rampage allegedly by a Syrian asylum seeker at a street festival in the western city of Solingen had exposed critical weaknesses in the country’s immigration and security policy.

More Australians agree with Dutton’s visa pause for Gazans than oppose it, Guardian Essential poll shows

Exclusive: Survey also finds more than half of respondents say Australia is on the wrong track, while Albanese records approval rating of -10

More voters back Peter Dutton’s call to pause arrivals of Palestinians from the Gaza conflict than oppose it, in a sign the opposition leader’s rhetoric is politically profitable despite the charge he is intentionally dividing Australians.

Despite the fact border crossings from Gaza are already closed, 44% of respondents to Guardian Australia’s latest Essential poll agreed with Dutton’s call for a pause, compared with 30% who opposed it and 26% undecided.

Delivering the annual John Curtin Oration in Melbourne, Chalmers unleashed a stinging attack on the opposition leader, calling Peter Dutton “the most divisive leader of a major political party in Australia’s modern history”. You can read the full details of his speech below:

He is the most divisive political leader that I’ve seen in my lifetime, and this is a deliberate choice by him. It’s not some accident. He divides deliberately, almost pathologically, and that sort of division in our leadership in our society right now is worse than disappointing. It’s dangerous, and in my view, it should be disqualifying when it comes to leading a great country like ours.

France has been plunged into further political chaos after Emmanuel Macron refused to name a prime minister from the leftwing coalition that won the most parliamentary seats in the snap election last month.

How do you best choose an Australian aged care facility and what do the star ratings mean?

Experts have questioned why so few homes are rated substandard, given the commission found one in three residents experience neglect, abuse or poor care

The star rating system of aged care homes was introduced in December 2022 to help older people and their families compare the quality and safety of services and providers.

Developed as a recommendation of the royal commission, the system has repeatedly come under scrutiny. Experts and unions have questioned why so few homes are rated substandard, given the commission found one in three residents experience neglect, abuse or poor care; and how homes on the non-compliance register manage ratings of three stars and above.

Australia politics live: Fatima Payman insists she has ‘no plans’ to form new party; CFMEU bill to pass parliament with Coalition backing

Former Labor senator told ABC’s Australian Story she will not form a Muslim-only party but in politics ‘you never commit definitively to anything’. Follow the day’s news live

The opposition has continued its political attacks against visas being given to Palestinians from Gaza (before Israel seized and completely closed the Rafah border in May).

The Australian newspaper has reported:

I guess the key point is we are using exactly the same processes as were used by the coalition when they were in power and when Peter Dutton was the minister. Mike Burgess, the Director-General of Asio, has confirmed that himself.

Peter Dutton was quite prepared to use certain processes when he was the minister, now we’re in power, he wants to criticise that. He wants to find division, to find reasons for criticism and be negative of the government.

I think this is just a ridiculous example he’s [Adam Bandt] giving, to disguise the fact yesterday the Greens were the only party in the Parliament who decided to side with John Setka and the organised crime and bikie elements around the CFMEU, rather than taking the side of the Australian people.

We had a vote in the Parliament yesterday, in the Senate, that called on the Greens to say they wouldn’t take political donations from the CFMEU construction division, they refused to vote for that. So I think it’s pretty clear what the motivation here is in voting against this legislation.

We haven’t received a dollar from the CFMEU for a decade, the Coalition received $175,000 in the last two years, Labor has received millions of dollars and what we say is we have not received the money, it is not why we are engaged in the debate.

Greek authorities have warned people to stay indoors with their “windows closed” as hundreds of firefighters battled to contain blazes on the outskirts of Athens that were forcing the evacuation of entire communities.

Volunteers had also joined the fight near the village of Varnava about 35km (21 miles) north of the city.
