Jordan Goudreau, 48, was charged in New York for smuggling and conspiracy alongside partner Yacsy Álvarez

A former US Green Beret who, in 2020, organized a failed crossborder raid of Venezuelan army deserters to remove President Nicolás Maduro has been arrested in New York on federal arms smuggling charges.

Australia’s inflation rise could light the fuse on an early election

The government’s popularity may pivot on Wednesday’s CPI figures and a pre-Christmas poll would be a prospect if it viewed the RBA’s job was done

The fortunes of Australia’s economy – and political polling of the Albanese government – may well hinge on the strength of Wednesday’s inflation numbers.

Economists expect headline consumer prices in the June quarter will land at an annual rate of 3.8%, accelerating from 3.6% in the prior three months. Core inflation – known as the trimmed mean – will be steady at 4%, a Bloomberg survey found.

Concerns NDIS changes will create robodebt 2.0 are ‘complete rubbish’, Bill Shorten says

Experts have warned new rules have ‘flavour and smell’ of the unlawful program but NDIS minister says comparison is ‘without basis’

Bill Shorten says comparisons suggesting changes to the NDIS will amount to a robodebt 2.0 are “complete rubbish” as the Greens and some experts raise concerns about how debt-raising measures might affect the disabled community.

At a hearing last week, legal experts warned senators that scheme participants could be stung with high amounts of debt if they incorrectly interpreted what items and supports can be funded under the new rules.

Experts warn patients are making ‘significant life changes’ based on the anti-Müllerian hormone test, which they say is not reliable for many of its advertised uses

Accredited fertility clinics are among companies misleading women about a blood test used to indicate fertility, resulting in women potentially making misinformed health decisions, researchers say.

Dr Tessa Copp, from the University of Sydney’s school of public health, says she and her colleagues are concerned by an increasing number of advertisements that overstate what the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) test is useful for.

Australia news live: Brittany Higgins announces pregnancy in lead-up to court return; king and queen confirm visit

Former Liberal staffer posts on social media from France that she is expecting a child. Follow today’s news headlines live

Treasurer Jim Chalmers spoke with ABC RN just a moment ago, and described learning about the shooting in real time on live television:

It was a bit surreal for me because I was live on TV when these events were unfolding … and we weren’t sure in real time that there had been a shooter, that there had been an assassination attempt, but it became very clear obviously in the aftermath [of] that interview just how serious this assassination attempt was. And we’re relieved that former President [Donald] Trump is okay, our hearts go out to the family of the man whose life was lost in the crowd.

Now it’s about what happened yesterday in Pennsylvania, it’s about January 6, but it goes beyond that as well. I think a lot of people around the world are worried about how ugly and dangerous politics has become, and I share those concerns. The democratic world needs to step back from the normalisation of extremism in politics. Democracy is supposed to help moderate and mend our differences, not magnify and horrify them.

If we make it normal that you can use violence to resolve political disputes, then we won’t have a democracy very quickly … If it can happen in the United States, it can happen anywhere.

And so it’s critically important at a time like this that everybody responds in a calm and measured way to ensure that there’s no further escalation.

But also because even here in Australia, we shouldn’t be complacent about these threats. While it’s true – we’ve got very different gun safety regulations, and everyone supports that – as you pointed out in your analysis this morning, they also have those strong laws in the United Kingdom and two members of parliament in UK in the last decade have been murdered.

Tesla won’t free up use of its batteries in Australia, leaving owners unable to reap full benefits

Exclusive: Experts say Tesla should be excluded from rebates for disabling function on its batteries in Australia that would let users alter power usage remotely

Australian owners of Tesla batteries could miss out on lucrative revenue streams because the US energy giant restricts the devices’ ability to interact locally with third parties and authorities continue to dither over setting and enforcing standards.

An increasing number of products from air conditioners to hot water heaters and solar panels can be controlled remotely, and consumers can sign deals rewarding them for altering power usage during peak load periods, including supplying electricity to grid.

She’s run rings around her own party and left the Labor leadership firmly of the view that there was more orchestration to the sequence of events than the senator has acknowledged.
