The Atherstone Shrove Tuesday ball game – in pictures

The annual Shrove Tuesday ball game has been played since the 12th century in Atherstone, Warwickshire. The ball, too large and heavy to kick far, is decorated with ribbons that can be exchanged for money by those lucky enough to grab one. Shop windows are boarded up and traffic is diverted while hundreds take part in what can only be described as a complete free-for-all
