Ireland election: Sinn Féin takes poll lead five days before vote

The nationalists are on 25%, ahead of Fianna Fáil on 23% and governing Fianna Gael on 20%, despite doubts about ability to form government

Sinn Féin has surged to the top of an opinion poll five days ahead of an election in Ireland that looks set to be a major breakthrough for the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army.

An Irish Times/ Ipsos MRBI poll published on Monday found support for the leftwing nationalist party at 25%, making it a clear leader, with support for centre-right Fianna Fáil at 23%. Support for governing Fine Gael was 20%.
