SCMP/Reuters: ‘They’ve been recording us’: Mexican President Lopez Obrador says as hidden camera found in National Palace offices

* Lopez Obrador said the device had been found in a room used for meetings but has not given details on who had placed it there

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday unseen forces were spying on him and his cabinet, revealing that a “sophisticated camera” had been discovered at the presidential offices in central Mexico City.

During a regular daily news briefing, in which he usually expounds on everything from history and economics to culture, Lopez Obrador said the device had been found in a room used for meetings in the National Palace, his headquarters.

“Just imagine, they’ve been recording us in a meeting room, here in the Palace,” the president said as he reflected on the importance of free speech and transparency.

Lopez Obrador, who did not provide details on the camera or how it came to be there, said he had no secrets.

UN warns ceasefire violations could spark Lebanon-Israel warThe council warning came in a resolution adopted unanimously Thursday extending the mandate of the U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon until Aug. 31, 2020. It was approved days after an alleged Israeli drone crashed in a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut and Lebanese army gunners fired at Israeli reconnaissance drones after they entered Lebanese airspace, heightening tensions between the two countries.

LONDON — A recent series of airstrikes in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon that neighboring countries blame on Israel risks escalating into a wider conflict, some analysts say.

The strikes — most of which Israel has not claimed responsibility for — began Saturday when Israel claimed to have thwarted an imminent Iranian attack by striking an elite wing of Iran's Revolutionary Guardnear Damascus, the Syrian capital.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Twitter that the Iranian fighters were targeting Israelis living in the Golan Heights, a region that Israel annexed from Syria after the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
