Collection of unreleased Marvin Gaye songs found in Belgium

Questions surround ownership of demo tapes reportedly left by soul artist as a thank-you to his Ostend hosts

A collection of cassette tapes containing a host of unreleased Marvin Gaye songs has been found in the Belgian city of Ostend.

The collection, thought to contain 66 demo songs, belonged to the musician Charles Dumolin, in whose home Gaye stayed in 1981 as he underwent detox to fight cocaine addiction. When Dumolin died in 2019, the recordings were handed down to his family, along with a cache of Gaye memorabilia.

Luis Rubiales faces 30 month jail sentence for Hermoso kiss

  • Spanish prosecutors issue two charges against Rubiales
  • Three others alleged to have coerced Hermoso

Luis Rubiales could face a prison sentence of two and a half years if convicted of kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips against her will, court documents have shown. The former Spanish football federation chief has been charged with one count of sexual assault and one of coercion in the aftermath of the kiss, offences carrying jail terms of one year and 18 months respectively.

The 46-year-old grabbed Hermoso and kissed her on the lips on 20 August during the awards ceremony after Spain beat England in the Women’s World Cup final in Sydney, sparking global outrage and causing a national debate in Spain about sexism. Hermoso and her teammates said the kiss was unwanted and demeaning, but Rubiales argued it was consensual and denied any wrongdoing.

Australia politics live: government asks Fair Work Commission for wage rises to keep up with inflation

The Albanese government has revealed details of its submission to the annual wage review. Follow the day’s news live

Here is how Jim Chalmers was selling the wage submission (at least on ABC TV this morning).

The treasurer said it wasn’t a binary choice between cost of living relief and wages growth:

We don’t see cost of living relief as “instead of” decent wages growth. We want to see wages growth on top of the billions of dollars of cost of living relief that the Albanese Government is rolling out.

…The tax cuts we’re rolling out for every one or cheaper childhood education or cheaper medicines - none of those are a substitute for getting wages growing in the economy once again.

I think if you’ve followed Tasmanian laws, and they’ve worked very well down there and actually your bill is based on that, you might have … a good good bit of airing out there and actually be able to settle this once and for all.

I think there’s a very fine line between having choices … and running … a business or a school or anything else.

People send their kids to faith based schools with expectations and I think we’ve got a walk a very, very fine line with all of that.

Moscow concert hall attack: what we know so far

Forty people are reported to have been killed and more than 100 wounded after gunmen opened fire at Crocus City Hall

Dozens of people have reportedly been killed and more than 100 wounded in an attack at a concert venue near Moscow.

Here is what we know about the shooting so far:

Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk near Moscow on Friday evening during a sold-out concert by the Russian rock group Piknik. Crocus City Hall is one of the largest and most popular music venues in the Moscow oblast.

Forty people are reported dead and more than 100 wounded after the shooting as of 19.15 GMT, Russian state news agencies said, citing Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

Up to five gunmen were believed to be involved in the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility by any group, but Russian prosecutors described the attack as “an act of terrorism”.

Videos emerged showing gunmen in tactical gear opening fire from automatic weapons as panicked Russians fled for their lives. The attackers also apparently detonated explosives, as the sounds of blasts could be heard in other videos from the attack.

TASS reported that people remained inside the building, which is almost completely engulfed in flames and that others were trapped on the roof.

Speznaz units of Russia’s national guard as well as police and firefighters were at the scene.

Earlier this month, western countries led by the United States had issued terror warnings and told their citizens not to join public gatherings in Russia. On 8 March, the US embassy wrote it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and US citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours”.

The rockfall at the Ballarat Gold Mine trapped 27 workers, 26 of whom were rescued on Wednesday. Follow the day’s news live

AWU Victorian branch secretary Ronnie Hayden said the man and another, who was freed on Wednesday night, were performing a manual type of mining called air legging when the collapse occurred:

We have spoken to WorkSafe. We were at the site last night until late. We are meeting with WorkSafe again shortly this morning to get more information on it. But we do know that the two workers were air legging, which is a type of manual mining, it appears under unsupported ground and there was a collapse.

About 5pm last night, we got a call from our members to attend the mine, being told that two of them were trapped underground. Shortly after that we were actually informed that one of their miners was killed at work. So it’s no longer a rescue. It’s now a recovery.

Portugal election: centre-right ahead with far-right Chega potentially key, exit poll says – live updates

First exit poll points to Democratic Alliance winning most votes, with far-right party poised to act as kingmaker in parliament

A first exit poll, carried out for SIC and Expresso, shows the following:

Centre-right Democratic Alliance (AD): 27.6 to 31.8% (with 77 to 89 deputies)

I honestly don’t know what I’m more afraid of - a xenophobic and racist far-right party exerting pressure on a democratic right-wing party, or if a government agreement with the Liberals who pose a threat to a worsening of the public services that are available to a big portion of the country only because they are free - health and education.

Ultimately, the parties who have ruled the country since the people have taken the power back from a dictatorship need to acknowledge how their failure at managing the public sector and giving a response to the very real concerns of the general public, whether they were on the agenda or not, is what is fuelling the far right. They need to step up how they govern and how they do politics, regardless of who wins tonight.
