‘Ukraine must defend itself’: Washington leaders dismiss Putin’s war talk
Russian leader’s warning of potential direct war with Nato regarded as sabre-rattling to weaken support for Ukraine
US officials and lawmakers have shot back at Vladimir Putin after the Russian leader said that Nato’s potential lifting of restrictions on Ukraine to launch long-range strikes into Russia would mean Nato countries were “at war” with Russia.
The prime minister, Keir Starmer, is meeting with the US president, Joe Biden, on Friday at the White House, where the two are expected to discuss – though not necessarily announce – a loosening of restrictions on Storm Shadow missiles that would allow Ukraine to strike targets as far as 155 miles inside Russia.

Putin: lifting Ukraine missile restrictions would put Nato ‘at war’ with Russia
Comments come after Antony Blinken hints US will lift restrictions on Kyiv’s use of weapons inside Russia
Vladimir Putin has said that a western move to let Kyiv use longer-range weapons against targets inside Russia would mean Nato would be “at war” with Moscow.
Putin spoke as US and UK top diplomats discussed easing rules on firing western weapons into Russia, which Kyiv has been pressing for, more than two and a half years into Moscow’s offensive.

Blinken hints US will lift restrictions on Ukraine using long-range arms in Russia
Decision understood to have already been made in private as secretary of state says in Kyiv that US will continue to adapt policy
The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, gave his strongest hint yet that the White House is about to lift its restrictions on Ukraine using long-range weapons supplied by the west on key military targets inside Russia, with a decision understood to have already been made in private.
Speaking in Kyiv alongside the UK foreign secretary, David Lammy, Blinken said the US had “from day one” been willing to adapt its policy as the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine changed. “We will continue to do this,” he emphasised.

Russia’s shadow oil fleet and Gaza ceasefire plan to top US-UK talks in London
Antony Blinken to meet David Lammy in precursor to Joe Biden’s talks with Keir Starmer in Washington
Moscow’s use of a shadow fleet transporting western-sanctioned oil, Ukraine’s call to fire to fire UK-supplied missiles into Russia, and the value of publishing a new version of the US ceasefire plan for Gaza will top US-UK talks in London being attended by Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state.
His meeting this week with the British foreign secretary, David Lammy, will make him the most senior US official to visit the UK since Labour’s general election victory in July. It is also a precursor to talks in Washington between Joe Biden and Keir Starmer at the end of the week.

Delivering the annual John Curtin Oration in Melbourne, Chalmers unleashed a stinging attack on the opposition leader, calling Peter Dutton “the most divisive leader of a major political party in Australia’s modern history”. You can read the full details of his speech below:
He is the most divisive political leader that I’ve seen in my lifetime, and this is a deliberate choice by him. It’s not some accident. He divides deliberately, almost pathologically, and that sort of division in our leadership in our society right now is worse than disappointing. It’s dangerous, and in my view, it should be disqualifying when it comes to leading a great country like ours.

The star rating system of aged care homes was introduced in December 2022 to help older people and their families compare the quality and safety of services and providers.
Developed as a recommendation of the royal commission, the system has repeatedly come under scrutiny. Experts and unions have questioned why so few homes are rated substandard, given the commission found one in three residents experience neglect, abuse or poor care; and how homes on the non-compliance register manage ratings of three stars and above.

Australia politics live: Fatima Payman insists she has ‘no plans’ to form new party; CFMEU bill to pass parliament with Coalition backing
Former Labor senator told ABC’s Australian Story she will not form a Muslim-only party but in politics ‘you never commit definitively to anything’. Follow the day’s news live
The opposition has continued its political attacks against visas being given to Palestinians from Gaza (before Israel seized and completely closed the Rafah border in May).
The Australian newspaper has reported:
I guess the key point is we are using exactly the same processes as were used by the coalition when they were in power and when Peter Dutton was the minister. Mike Burgess, the Director-General of Asio, has confirmed that himself.
Peter Dutton was quite prepared to use certain processes when he was the minister, now we’re in power, he wants to criticise that. He wants to find division, to find reasons for criticism and be negative of the government.
I think this is just a ridiculous example he’s [Adam Bandt] giving, to disguise the fact yesterday the Greens were the only party in the Parliament who decided to side with John Setka and the organised crime and bikie elements around the CFMEU, rather than taking the side of the Australian people.
We had a vote in the Parliament yesterday, in the Senate, that called on the Greens to say they wouldn’t take political donations from the CFMEU construction division, they refused to vote for that. So I think it’s pretty clear what the motivation here is in voting against this legislation.
We haven’t received a dollar from the CFMEU for a decade, the Coalition received $175,000 in the last two years, Labor has received millions of dollars and what we say is we have not received the money, it is not why we are engaged in the debate.

The commission had said that under most of the business terms, Apple allows steering only through “link-outs”, meaning that app developers can include a link in their app that redirects the customer to a web page where the customer can conclude a contract.

Brazil cuts ties with Nicaragua as it rethinks links with leftist authoritarians
Two countries expel each other’s ambassadors amid growing tensions between Lula and Venezuela’s Maduro
Brazil and Nicaragua have expelled each other’s ambassadors in a tit-for-tat diplomatic row, as Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, appears to recalibrate his approach to authoritarian leftist rulers who were once seen as allies.
The dual expulsions this week came amid growing tensions between Lula and another supposedly progressive leader, Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, whose claim of re-election the Brazilian president has yet to acknowledge. Lula and his counterparts in Colombia and Mexico have called on Maduro to release voting tallies from all polling stations to support his win.

We did not raise the threat level in direct response to the conflict in Gaza. But of course, it has an indirect impact.
It has driven protests, it has driven division, and those protests are getting very emotional and there has been spontaneous violence. It becomes a bit of its own weather system and the wrong thing happens and it fires up the wrong things and is driving strong emotions and strong reactions and again, that’s our concern.

Australia news live: Brittany Higgins announces pregnancy in lead-up to court return; king and queen confirm visit
Former Liberal staffer posts on social media from France that she is expecting a child. Follow today’s news headlines live
Treasurer Jim Chalmers spoke with ABC RN just a moment ago, and described learning about the shooting in real time on live television:
It was a bit surreal for me because I was live on TV when these events were unfolding … and we weren’t sure in real time that there had been a shooter, that there had been an assassination attempt, but it became very clear obviously in the aftermath [of] that interview just how serious this assassination attempt was. And we’re relieved that former President [Donald] Trump is okay, our hearts go out to the family of the man whose life was lost in the crowd.
Now it’s about what happened yesterday in Pennsylvania, it’s about January 6, but it goes beyond that as well. I think a lot of people around the world are worried about how ugly and dangerous politics has become, and I share those concerns. The democratic world needs to step back from the normalisation of extremism in politics. Democracy is supposed to help moderate and mend our differences, not magnify and horrify them.
If we make it normal that you can use violence to resolve political disputes, then we won’t have a democracy very quickly … If it can happen in the United States, it can happen anywhere.
And so it’s critically important at a time like this that everybody responds in a calm and measured way to ensure that there’s no further escalation.
But also because even here in Australia, we shouldn’t be complacent about these threats. While it’s true – we’ve got very different gun safety regulations, and everyone supports that – as you pointed out in your analysis this morning, they also have those strong laws in the United Kingdom and two members of parliament in UK in the last decade have been murdered.
