Experts predict ‘potentially massive’ global impact of Peter Bol doping case

  • Bol’s lawyers want Sporting Integrity Australia to drop probe
  • SIA and Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory silent

Sport Integrity Australia and the government laboratory accused of botching Peter Bol’s anti-doping test sample are staying silent as pressure builds and experts underscore the “potentially massive” global ramifications of the Olympian’s case.

Tokyo 2020 star and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Bol tested positive for synthetic erythropoietin, a performance-enhancing drug, in January. But last month his B-sample returned an atypical finding, allowing Bol to return to competition as SIA’s investigation continues.

Australia politics live: unions call for minimum wage boost, Indigenous voice bill to be introduced

ACTU chief Sally McManus says rise is essential to keep lowest-paid workers’ ‘heads above water’

Good morning and welcome to our rolling coverage of the final day of a huge sitting fortnight in the federal parliament. I’m Martin Farrer and I’ll bring you some of the moving stories overnight before Amy Remeikis fires up again.

Our top story this morning is a call by trade unions for a pay rise of 7% for the lowest-paid workers, a raise in the national minimum wage of $1.50 an hour to keep pace with inflation. Australian Council of Trade Unions secretary Sally McManus said the rise was “essential” to help workers “keep their heads above water”. Our economics commentator Greg Jericho says the doomsayers are wrong: the sky won’t fall in if people get a decent pay rise.

Investors see the writing on the wall. They know that coal and gas is on its way out and understand that the hard cap negotiated by the Greens means there’s a limit on coal and gas expansion in this country from now on.

We just can’t keep expanding coal and gas and stay below the hard cap. That’s what we’ve what we’ve legislated. I

The principle is … that we want the voice, when it’s established, to be able to advise government on matters that are important to Indigenous people.

Now, I saw the opposition yesterday trying to cause trouble, say [the voice would be able to] advise the Reserve Bank on interest rates, and you’re going to see more of this and the prime minister is rightly, rightly keeping the focus on where it should be.

On Thursday, the referendum question for the Indigenous voice to parliament will be introduced into the parliament.

They seem to me to be a very safe formula with a bit of a double precaution against some of the the notions that were floated by opponents. So, for example, there’s absolutely no possibility now that Parliament will not be able to control the manner in which the executive, for example, will deal with representations by the voice. All of that now has been put beyond any doubt by the explicit capacity of Parliament’s from time to time to check adjust and control the way in which procedures will operate.

More than £75bn wiped off FTSE 100 amid Credit Suisse crisis

Swiss bank’s shares fall to record low as top shareholder Saudi National Bank rules out more funding

More than £75bn was wiped off the FTSE 100 on Wednesday, as Swiss authorities stepped in to reassure panicked markets over the health of the embattled European banking giant Credit Suisse.

The Swiss central bank and its financial markets regulator issued a joint statement on Wednesday evening, pledging to provide emergency funding if necessary. They insisted there was no “direct risk” of contagion from turmoil in the US banking system, after the sudden collapse last week of the US lender Silicon Valley Bank.

Argentina’s inflation rate soars past 100%, its worst in over 30 years

Annual rate of 102.5% is denting purchasing power, savings, economic growth and government’s chances in elections next year

Argentina’s annual inflation rate tore past 100% in February, the country’s statistics agency has announced, the first time it has hit triple figures since a period of hyperinflation in 1991, over three decades ago.

Inflation over 12 months clocked in at 102.5% in the second month of the year, according to government data released on Tuesday, with a higher-than-expected 6.6% monthly rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and a 13.1% year-to-date increase.

Australia live news: Morrison says China threat inspired Aukus deal, Woodside directors face climate challenge

Former PM tells ABC’s 7.30 that he pursued plan to prevent war with Beijing; three energy giant board members targeted by shareholder activists. Follow the day’s news live

Households in three states will face increases in the power bills of as much as 23.7% from 1 July if the Australian Energy Regulator’s draft determination is confirmed.

The increases in the so-called default market offer were outlined in a media release from the regulator on Wednesday morning.

It’s still an increase so it’s not as bad as it could have been.

The default market offer isn’t meant to be the cheapest rate out there - quite the opposite.

I also note Australia’s previous declaration to the Agency that it does not intend to pursue uranium enrichment or reprocessing in relation to Aukus and that it has no plans to undertake nuclear fuel fabrication as part of this effort.

Foreign Minister Wong has formally requested the Agency to commence negotiations on an arrangement required under Article 14 of Australia’s CSA. In accordance with the applicable norms (modified Code 3.1 of its Subsidiary Arrangements), Australia has also provided to the Agency preliminary design information related to this project.

France faces another day of strikes ahead of key vote on pension reforms

Rubbish piles up and record number of people take to streets in protest against raising retirement age to 64

French unions have called for a show of force with a final day of strikes and protests in the run-up to a crucial vote on Emmanuel Macron’s fiercely contested pensions overhaul in parliament.

The call for an eighth day of national mobilisation on Wednesday comes as rubbish piles up in Paris and a number of other French cities after continuing strikes by refuse collectors who oppose the bill that will increase the official retirement age from 62 to 64.

US border patrol closes bridge to Juárez after rumor causes migrant rush

Hundreds of migrants tried to race across the Paso del Norte bridge to El Paso after false internet post said the border was open

Hundreds of people near an El Paso, Texas, border crossing who tried to enter the US from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, on Sunday were met with physical barricades erected by shield-wielding authorities, according to reports on what is the latest episode to pit US immigration officials against a group of migrants.

Many of the migrants, who were largely Venezuelan, had gone to the center of the Paso del Norte international bridge to determine whether a rumor that the border had been temporarily opened to them was true, the Texas Tribune reported. Many trying to flee lives in Mexico, where they cannot legally work and are often confronted by police, had hurried through toll booths on the Mexican side of the bridge and arrived at the center.

Circling back to the interview with Tammy Tyrrell. Tyrrell wants to see the government invest at least 4% of its multibillion-dollar social housing plan in Tasmania. She says it’s only fair, as a government survey shows 4.6% of people most in need of housing support are in Tasmania.

Tyrrell says she will be meeting next week with the housing minister, Julie Collins, about the request.

They haven’t shut me down. They haven’t said no, but they haven’t said yes.

It’s absolutely fundamental to everything that I do. My job is to represent the people of Indi in the federal parliament and in doing that, I try my darnedest to connect policy to the people to the policy, every single time.

So I go to them when I have to make a decision about a piece of legislation I may not be clear on. And I go to them and explain why I’ve made the decision I have once that legislation is through the parliament.

Ukraine identifies PoW killed by Russians as Oleksandr Igorevich Matsievskyi

Detained combatant seen in graphic 12-second clip circulated on Telegram had initially been wrongly named Tymofiy Shadura

Ukraine’s security services have concluded that the prisoner of war killed by Russian soldiers in a grim clip that spread quickly across Ukraine and much of the world is Oleksandr Igorevich Matsievskyi, bringing an end to the dispute over his identity.

In the graphic 12-second clip that first circulated on Telegram last Monday, a detained combatant is seen standing in a shallow trench smoking a cigarette. The soldier, in uniform with a Ukrainian flag insignia on his arm, says “Glory to Ukraine” and is then apparently shot with automatic weapons by a group of Russian soldiers.
