Why is cocaine washing up on the beaches of Fiji? – podcast
A multibillion-dollar operation involving cocaine and methamphetamines is having a major impact on islands in the Pacific. Kate Lyons travelled to Fiji to investigate. Plus: John Harris on Facebook’s cryptocurrency
Last year, 120 bricks of cocaine, each worth thousands of dollars, washed up on the beaches of remote islands in Fiji. With traffickers increasingly using the islands as a staging post in the supply of drugs from central America to Australia and New Zealand, Fijian police have found themselves on the frontline of an illicit multibillion-dollar industry.
The Guardian’s Kate Lyons tells Anushka Asthana about the impact it has had on Fiji, which appears ill-equipped to handle the new reality of drug addiction on the islands or the trade’s wider societal effects.

Japan resumes commercial whaling for first time in 30 years
Fishermen set sail to hunt whales on Monday after country’s withdrawal from International Whaling Commission
Japanese fishermen have set sail to hunt whales commercially for the first time in more than three decades, after Tokyo’s controversial decision to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission.
The hunts are likely to spark criticism from environmentalists and anti-whaling countries, but are cause for celebration among whaling communities in Japan, which say the practice is a long-standing tradition.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: What do you do on an Android phone that cannot be done on an iPhone?

Not trying to start a flame war. I am finally switching away from my trusty Nokia Lumia 920 because the browser wouldn't load m.uber.com and WhatsApp says app will be gone at the end of the year. I like the snappiness of Windows Phone and iPhone UI. Haven't checked Android phones recently but years ago the UI was laggy and no one except I seem to notice. Also know that sideloading apps, blocking ads in apps etc. is much easier on Android so I am hard pressed to decide between the two.

Trump to travel to demilitarised zone for possible meeting with Kim Jong-un
US president’s trip to border between Koreas comes as he hails China trade deal as ‘far better than expected’
Donald Trump will travel to the demilitarised zone dividing the two Koreas on Sunday for a possible impromptu summit with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un.
In tweets early on Sunday Trump did not mention Kim but said his schedule for the day would include a speech to US troops and a “long planned” visit to the DMZ.

Russia has agreed with Saudi Arabia to extend by six to nine months a deal with Opec on reducing oil output, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, said, as oil prices come under renewed pressure from rising US supplies and a slowing global economy.
The Saudi energy minister, Khalid al-Falih, said on Sunday that the deal would most likely be extended by nine months and no deeper reductions were needed.

The Killers at Glastonbury 2019 review – anthemic headliners triumph
Pyramid stage
Brandon Flowers and co – with a little help from the Pet Shop Boys, Johnny Marr and the pyrotechnics department – provide one of those special Glastonbury Moments
A band that obviously have nothing in common musically with Stormzy, the Killers nevertheless share a problem: before they play, a shadow hangs over their headline performance. One rumour circulating around the audience is that they were the third choice for the Saturday night headlining slot, drafted in after big name heritage artists declined to sign up. Whether that’s true or not, something about Brandon Flowers’ demeanour onstage, at least initially, suggests a man who isn’t entirely sure how things are going to pan out. “At the end of this show, I don’t want anyone to say ‘They got away with it,’” he offers, early on in the band’s set. “I want people to look up to this stage and say: ‘Those are the sons of bitches that did it.’”
Certainly, you’re stuck by the sense of a band who both understand the importance of a headlining slot – the Killers’ 2004 performance at the festival played a considerable part in their rise to success – and are determined to prove their worth. Indeed, if Flowers worked any harder to win over the crowd, he’d be down among them smearing them with after-sun cream and asking if they want him to pop to a stall and get them some Rizlas. He asks them “Are we on the same page?” He turns everything into an act of audience participation, up to and including counting in a song. He pretends to be overcome with emotion during a lull in Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll, then slyly raises his eyebrows and beckons for more applause. As with Stormzy’s set, from the opening moment, every song arrives strafed with lazers or pyrotechnics or confetti cannons.

U.S. Navy Has Been Granted A Patent That Looks Like An UFO
Daily Mail: U.S. Navy has been granted a patent on theoretical aircraft resembling recently-reported UFOs that could bend the laws of physics to fly through water, air, and space
* The U.S. Navy patented a technology that could bend the laws of physics
* Theoretical tech would allow the craft to travel through air, water, and space
* By creating a 'quantum bubble' the craft could achieve 'extreme speeds'
* Descriptions of the craft are similar to recent UFO sightings by the U.S. Navy
* A letter from the U.S. Navy states that China is 'investing heavily' in the tech
The U.S. Navy has been assigned a patent on an aerospace technology that is eerily similar to a string of UFOs described by fighter pilots.
A technology patented by an aerospace engineer working at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) describes a 'hybrid' craft that is capable of flying at breakneck speeds in the air, water, and even space using an unprecedented electromagnetic propulsion system.
As reported by The Drive, when looking over a patent on the technology, an examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office responded with skepticism that such a craft exists only to receive a personal letter from the Chief Technology Officer of the U.S. Navy, who explained that Chinese researchers are 'investing significantly' in the craft.

President Xi Vows To Compensate Victims Of Intellectual Property Theft And To Liberalize The Economy
SCMP: Victims of intellectual property theft will be compensated, Xi Jinping tells world leaders
* Chinese leader also says a channel will be set up for foreign firms to make complaints and Beijing will take ‘major steps’ to further liberalise economy
* Promises come right before talks with US President Donald Trump in Osaka
Foreign businesses that have fallen victim to intellectual property theft will be compensated and a channel will be set up for them to make complaints, Chinese President Xi Jinping told world leaders in Japan on Friday.
Xi’s pledge at the Group of 20 summit in Osaka came ahead of a highly anticipated meeting with US President Donald Trump on Saturday, as the bloc faces division at a gathering overshadowed by a year-long trade war between the two countries.
In his keynote speech, Xi said China would take “major steps” to further liberalise its economy and reduce market restrictions for foreign investors.
